Starting small: Seven things about me

There’s a certain business topic I’ve been writing about since I started this blog. It’s one of the reasons why I started the blog - I was hoping my experiences would help others. Unfortunately, I haven’t actually posted any of it. (Editor’s Note: Ironically, this post has changed slightly from the original posting.)

I know, I know. Penelope, Rebecca and Tiffany (and countless others) have guts. I truly admire those who are able to put it all out there - good and bad.

That said, I thought I would share some random tidbits about myself. (Start small, right?). So here it goes:

1. I’m left-handed.
Being left-handed has always made me a little different (but I have a feeling I would be a little different even without that). Many left-handers are proud of this fact and enjoy finding other left-handers - I’m no exception!

2. I married my high school sweetheart.
This year marks our 10-year anniversary! So, yes, we started dating at 16. We got married at 23, which, I know, is young, but it makes sense when you fall in love at 16.

3. I love my dog.
She “helps” me write my blog posts by laying on me the whole time. She hates the laptop because it demands my time.

4. My dream is to write a book.
I’ve been writing books since I was about five, and I hope to one day see my name on a book.

5. I’m a semi-vegetarian who has recently decided to convert back to a “real” vegetarian.
My boss calls me a “convenient vegetarian” because the only meat I eat is chicken (and occasionally turkey). For a while I was a real vegetarian, but felt I had to eat chicken to be polite as a guest in other people’s homes (and so I didn’t starve in college). Last week, I declared that I was going back to being a real vegetarian. (I’ll let you know how that goes - I have a true weakness for chicken from fast food places.)

6. I’m a Lost fanatic.
If you haven’t checked it out, rent the DVDs and catch up. You will love it!

7. My degree is in technical writing.
Don’t bash me for writing skills now! Even though I don’t work as a technical writer (and don’t want to), what I learned in school has helped me get where I am today in my career.

So, let me know if we have anything (or nothing, for that matter!) in common!

  1. Angela,
Thanks so much for the kind words. It takes time and is a continual process to learn the level of transparency you want online, so congratulations on taking the initial step!

Oh, and I’m also a Lost fanatic. So addicted! :)

  2. That’s so funny. There have been numerous times where I’ve posted something on my blog at night and took it down in the morning. It’s tough to put yourself out there.. but also really liberating when you do.

This was a great start! I’m envious that you married your high school sweetheart. Lucky you :)

(also, a lot of people don’t have google/blogger accounts so you may want to allow others to comment in your comments section)

  3. Hello,

I like what you got going here! I think you hit it right on about putting yourself out there and how vulnerable it is. Good stuff here, I enjoy it!

  4. @ Tiffany - Thanks for the encouragement and support. It sounds silly, but it really does mean a lot.

@ Rebecca - Its’ nice to know you’re not the only one who goes through this feeling of anxiety! You have a tougher challenge because you’ve put everything out there (i.e. your last name, organization). I truly admire your openess, and I hope I can get there one day. Also, thanks for the tip on the comments - I’ll definitely make that change.

@ Ray - Thanks so much for the comment and support. Believe it or not, just this post gave me some anxiety!

  5. i confess that one of the reasons i love reading rebecca and tiffany is because they can put so much of themselves on their blog. but i think everyone starts small. i know i did. and i think that more interesting than watching someone pour their whole life into a blog is watching someone do it selectively, in small steps, getting comfortable. that process never ends, i think. just you end up stepping in different places. so i liked reading this post. i liked the small steps.

  6. Thanks, Penelope. It’s definitely a different experience putting yourself completely out there - A concept you’ve definitely mastered. I appreciate the support and you’ll hear more in small steps.

  7. I just found your blog through Google Reader and I love it —

I, too, read Penelope and Rebecca and admire their devil-may-care attitude.

When I read this post I realized how similar we sounded.

    Best wishes
